THE ART

yeeox is called yeeox because Cheung Yee himself is the second eldest in his family (two is pronounced as ‘yee’ in Cantonese) and coincidentally, the ox also comes second in the twelve zodiac. This bronze sculpture patched with gold foils originated from a paper yeeox prototype folded by the very own hands of Cheung Yee. Traces of Cheung’s paper-folding process can be clearly seen – the ridges on the back of yeeox; the overlapping of corners on the left side of yeeox’s head; and the creases and dents where Cheung’s fingers had been. yeeox is sculpted with utmost faithfulness to Cheung’s paper prototype preserving the delicacy of human touch of the artist’s hands and the modesty of the buffalo.
